Definition 2

A true definition must have three basic requirements. These requirements are that it should not contain examples and be to broad or narrow, which helps to specify the words essence. A term must also be defined using terms more familiar than themselves. The failure to meet these requirements when defining the words game, yellow, and murder will be used to better explain the requirements.

If the definition of "yellow" were to be, "a color like that of a mid day sun", the use of examples to define something like the color yellow is not sufficient. The usefulness of an example is based on experience. A blind ma could not know what is meant by the color of the sun as wouldn't a man who had only seen the sun threw blue windows better understand the word yellow properly. A good definition of the word yellow would be, "the visual sensation received by the human eye when a wavelength of around 540 nm. On the electromagnetic spectrum enters it. A layman or even some college students have no idea what that means. The use of familiar words allows for the communication of a words definition to people without further confusing them with new ones.
