The book 1984 easily disproves the quote said by Anthony Lake. It is the concept that the book is all about that proves Mr. Lake wrong. This concept is a form of government called totalitarianism.

Through misleading the public, the Party was able to lead Oceana. Ways in which the Party misled the public were through publishing articles in the newspapers and making statements over the telescreens about statistics that showed life in Oceana getting better when it was actually getting more restricted and more poor.
