A detailed Summary of a decision is made

On September 10, 2000 Myles Brand, the Indiana University school president, made a major decision which would change Indiana University forever. Bob Knight, the Indiana University basketball coach for over 29 years, was fired due to what Brand called "a persistent and troubling pattern of behavior" even after Brand instituted a zero-tolerance policy. (Gildea, A1) Students, faculty, alumni, enemies, and fans of Indiana University from all over the country were outraged, happy, confused, and relieved after hearing Brand's decision. Newspapers from all over the country were writing articles about this sudden event, and were getting an enormous amount of editorials on this subject. Among those articles were ones written from The Washington Post, the SF Chronicle, The Arizona Republic, the Wall Street Journal, as well as Indiana University's own newspaper, the Indiana Daily Student.

People around the country were outraged at Brand's decision. They could not understand that Brand was looking out for what was best for the University and its students. In an article from the Washington Post, the day after Knight was fired, it mentions, "Brand said that Knight made several attempts to embarrass Indiana University. In private an

Steve and Kacy Pflugner, both Indiana University graduates of the class of 1997, had this to say about the firing of Knight in a recent editorial written to the Indiana Daily Student: "We were both shocked and dismayed by the dismissal of Coach Knight Sunday. If Brand thinks that this decision is the best for the University, he could not be any farther from the truth. The firing of Coach Knight will damage the University far more then anything Coach Knight could possibly have done over his entire career at IU. Coach Knight is as much a part of the institution that IU, as the Indiana Memorial Union, the Main Library or Ballantine Hall." (Pflugner, par 1) Many people felt this way after they had heard what happened to Bob Knight. They responded with such letters to the Indiana Daily Student and the Wall Street Journal as well as many other newspapers around the country. "Police equipped with riot gear followed hundreds of students as they marched through the Bloomington, Ind., campus in protest of Knight's firing and burned Brand in effigy in front of his home." (Gildea, A1)

"In the coming days and months, when people talk about the firing of Bob Knight, Indiana University's basketball coach, many of them will shake their heads and say, 'It shouldn't have ended that way.'" (Feinstein, A26) This is one way of looking at it, while other people will be walking around thinking, "In fact, though, it had to end this way." (Feinstein, A26) There will always be two sides of a story, and they will always be projected in different ways. In this case, Bob Knight was looked at as an inspiring mentor for students, and an excellent coach for basketball, but at the same time, he was look at as an abusive mentor, and an abusive coach. The way people feel will be projected in their writing forever. People may not know how else to get their feelings out. Going through histories and reading what people thought at the time won't give you an exact feeling on what happened that day, but it will give you some perspective on what others think. The environment that people are in will influence the way
