Brave New World - The Motto

Community, Identity, and Stability. This motto seems to appropriately state the nature of the hatchery, as well as the nature of the world that Huxley creates. The center strives for community, identity, and stability as it literally creates the people of the world. The motto helps Huxley use setting in three different situations. When describing community, Huxley creates the Infant Nurseries and the Neo-Pavlovion Condition Rooms to show setting. Huxley uses the Decanting Room to symbolize the setting for the second part of the motto, identity. Finally the Fertilizing Room is an example of setting while describing stability.

Infant Nurseries and the Neo-Pavlovion Condition Rooms is where the conditioning process is demonstrated for the students. In clear sight in the room, there are bowls of roses and books with pictures of beasts, birds and other creatures. The babies are brought in and


set before the objects as soon as the infants begin to respond with delight over what they see, a series of explosions and shocks are generated to frighten them. The very sight of the roses and picture books causes feelings of aversion and terror in the children. Therefore, the state believes the children will be safe "from books and botany all their lives." Huxley uses this scene to portray the motto of "community".

While visiting the Fertilizing Room in Huxley's, Brave New World, it shows how the ova are fertilized in test tubes to be grown into human beings. Because of scientific advancements, the kind of human beings created can be controlled. Depending on the society's needs, either superior humans or inferior humans. In the Boiling Room, it is explained that the eggs are removed from the test tubes and placed in bottles in an assembly line manner. The bottles are labeled and identifie
