A detailed Summary of Calculus Paper


Calculus consists of four basic topics: limits, derivatives, indefinite integrals, and definite integrals. These topics build upon one another; with out adequate knowledge of one, it is difficult to master the others. The concepts we grasp in this course are useful for many professions and can be used to interpret many types of problems that may at first seem intimidating but soon become second nature. With the aid of a graphing calculator, we can now solve more complex problems than in the past. Calculus students today are capable of accomplishing much more within the field than ever thought possible.

The topic that forms the basis for calculus is that of limits. Hence, a background in analysis, the study of limits, is crucial to any individual wishing to explore the world of calculus. Basically, the limit of a function f as x approaches a value c is the y-value f(x) stays close to when x is kept close enough but not equal to c


Finally, two types of integrals make up the final areas of calculus. A definite integral can be defined as the product of a dependent variable and change in independent variable for a function where the dependent variable may take on different values. Also, it a definite integral can be determined by finding the area under the graph of a function over a given interval. A function is an indefinite integral or antiderivative of another function if and only if the derivative of the first function is equal to the second function. The two types of integrals are related by the fundamental theorem of calculus. Over the course of a year in calculus, one will learn many intriguing and sometimes challenging methods to use for the purpose of integrating functions.
