Arms and the Man
The play took place during the time period of the Russian revolution, I believe. I'm not entirely sure, but it was Bulgaria and Syria fighting. The setting took place entirely in the house of the Petkoff house; a Bulgarian major's house and family. The plot was a pretty basic, straightforward concept. It's in the middle of the war, and fighting is occurring right outside the house. Catherine, a daughter is about to go to sleep, when a soldier bursts into her room through the balcony window. He is a Swiss fighter for her enemy, Syria. For some reason, she decides to help him, and hide him away in her room. He leaves safely and isn't heard of again until the war subsequently ends shortly afterward. Major Petkoff comes home with Sergius Saranoff-Catherine's fiance. Then we find out that they do not really love each other. Sergius is really in love with the maid, Louka. Then things get tricky, as the Swiss fighter, Bluntschli, comes back to the house to return the jacket he escaped the house wearing. Eventually
I am no expert on acting, but I thought the actors and actresses were superb. I felt every character fit his/her part. They did a really good job dealing with the accents. The pauses were used very effectively also. They knew how to wait for a laugh or whatnot. , everyone finds out that he was the one that hid in the house. We also find out that Bluntschli and Catherine are in love. It all works out nice a pretty, when everyone is on the same page, and the parents learn of Bluntschli's fortune. I was initially impressed with the set, and only more so amazed as the production moved along, and I saw the intricacies and detail of it. The set was very realistic, clearly showing and abiding by the time the play took place. In addition, it was amazing to see the crew change sets during the intermissions. It looked like it took a great deal of effort to create such a magnificent set. The scenery went along with everything of the time period. They made it even more realistic with one prop, which was the cigarettes and pipes. Much more effective
