The Libertarian presidential ticket appeared on all 50 state ballots (plus DC) in the past two elections, and is on every ballot in the 2000 election. Currently, 170 Libertarians hold elective office, more than twice as many as all other third parties combined. The Libertarian Party is a self-proclaimed "grassroots" political organization, encouraging citizens to join their campaign to "restore the American dream of liberty and justice for all." IIn November, the official Libertarian candidates for President and Vice President will be Harry Browne and Art Olivier.
A current ad for Harry Browne for President, however, does not necessa
rily convey the message of the Libertarian Party to the average audience member. An odd combination of slapstick humor, aggravating cliches and radical political thought does little to gain votes or even approval for Harry Browne.The idea is simple: Browne wants to remedy the fraudulent Social Security system in the U.S. Libertarians believe that Americans should not have to depend on politicians for their retirement. Instead of a straightforward approach to the political commercial, Browne starts and ends his denouncement of Social Security with an almost cartoon-like scene. An elderly man sits down to breakfast, and before he can eat, it is whisked away, replaced by a can of cat food.
