Potential Conversation
In this day and age people lead very different lifestyles. Some people may be intensely into materialistic things; thus they dedicate their lives to obtaining the means for paying for those things. There may be others who live adventurous lives and devote all their time to taking risks. Furthermore, there are women and men who make family their number one priority and devote their lives to being a stay-at-home mom or dad. I'm sure that all these individuals who choose to pursue such lives are content with their lives. If they were told that their lives were not worth living I'm sure they would have an objection. Plato a famous philosopher would object to their style of living. Plato believed in the words of his teacher Socrates, who stated, "life without...examination is not worth living" (Paths 138). What if Plato had the chance to meet with these people individually? I'm sure there would be a controversial conversation between them. For instance, what if Plato met with the person who wanted materialistic things. Their conversation might start off with Plato saying, "How can you say your life is worth living, when you do not even seek for the true meaning of life?" In response, the mat
In the day and age that we live in today I do not think Plato's philosophy would hold true anymore. We are in the year 2000 AD, Plato lived in 400 BC. The world has changed tremendously; I'm not saying that all the changes were good, because some were good and some were bad. However, I do feel that the world that we live in today is not afraid to be different, we're not afraid to understand how other individuals live. We are at a stage where we embrace change with open minds. Contrastingly, in Plato's time to be different was to be an outcast. Therefore, if you did not live the way Plato believed you should live then yes, your life was meaningless. In the time in which we live now, it's to each it's own. 'I am your very grateful and devoted servant, but I owe a greater obedience to God than to you; and so long as I draw breath and have faculties, I shall never stop practicing philosophy and exhorting you and indicating the truth for everyone that I meet' (Paths 133). The heart of what Plato said, is a life can and should be worth living. However, Plato believes that the only way to make life worth living is to examine life's truths and question its meaning. Plato feels that God is should be put above all else and God intended for humankind to be inquisitive about life. Here is an example of how Plato felt, The materialistic person's response might be, "In other words, your saying that we should live all live our lives like God? Do you know what that would mean? Everyone would be the same, because everyone would be asking questions that lead to all the same answers. 'You are mistaken, my friend, if you think that a man who is worth anything ought to spend his time weighing up to the prospects of life and death' (Paths 132). It takes a real man to do what he believes in and not follow the ways of others. How can you call yourself a philosopher? You are to close minded to be a philosopher. A philosopher is supposed to open to new ideas. It seems to
