Role Playing Games The Myth Debunked

Darius swings his broadsword, slicing through the evil goblin. Mortally wounded, the goblin turns and flees from the battle. Reaching down, Darius picks up his leather pack of supplies and slings it over his shoulder. He wipes his brow and sheaths the broadsword in the scabbard worn at his belt. Nodding to the other members of his group, he continues to lead them towards the great castle of Myst. Darius, along with his group of adventurers, makes his way through the castle, battling monsters and overcoming obstacles. After recovering their golden artifact, the mage of the group casts a teleportation spell that returns them to the royal town of Baldur. Darius returns the stolen artifact to the rightful king and he is rewarded with a bag of gold and the praise of the whole kingdom.

This is an example of what might commonly happen during a role-playing game (RPG) session. Most people are guilty of making assumptions about role-playing games without ever actually experiencing them. Many people believe that role-playing games are demonic and negatively affect the minds of the people who play them. On the contrary, the opposite is true: role-playing games actually are perfectly fine, and beneficial in some cases, for peopl

Another non-factual belief is that role-playing games are detrimental simply because they incorporate the use of magic and special powers. However, the use of magic and sorcery is nothing for anyone to harbor dislike over. If you disagree with the fictional use of magic in role-playing games, you would also have to dislike fairytales such as Cinderella and Snow White, holidays such as Christmas and Halloween, and literature such as Shakespeare's Macbeth and Homer's Iliad. From the magic of Cinderella's fairy godmother to the three witches of Macbeth's torment, all of these have a component of magic and mysticism in them. To forsake role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragonsc is to forsake a child's fairytales and revered literary works. The concept of magic is one that opens the mind to imagination and creative inspirations. The recently popular Harry Potter books are all centered on magic. And anything that causes young children to want to read 700-page books cannot be a bad thing. There is simply no real fact in the argument against magical components in role-playing games.

And lastly, demons and magic aside, many believe that role-playing games are simply a waste of time. This belief is simply not true.
