Charles Dickens is one of the most popular writers in literature history. Charles Dickens, born Charles John Huffman Dickens, was born on Feb. 7 1812 in Portsmouth where his father was a clerk at the Naval Pay Office. Four years later his family moved to Chatham and then later moved to London. In 1824 Charles Dickens father went to Debtor's prison. In 1833 Charles Dickens published his first story " A Dinner at Poplar Walk". In 1838he published one of his most popular stories, Oliver Twist. Then on June 9, 1870 Charles Dickens writing days came to end when he suffered a fatal stroke and died. He was buried in Westminster Abbey. This was the story of Charles Dickens life and now I will discuss in my paper the possible affects that his books had on the world but highly concentrate on one book in general and that is the book Hard Times. Also I discuss how Charles Dickens paid very close attention to the world around him. The last thing is how the world around Charles Dickens influenced him as a person. Charles Dickens' books had a great affect on the world. His books are considered classic and many schools around the nation require his writing to be read. Also his writings in ways affected how some laws we
re made. How he did this was he wrote about the social problems within the government or just problems with the way that things were being done in general. In his book Hard Times there were plenty examples like on chapter 11, page 77, and footnote 8. This line says " I ha' coom to ask yo, sir, how I am to be ridded o' this woman." This line is speaking about the problem that was quite common during Charles Dickens time period. The problem that this line is speaking about it was how it was all but impossible for a person who was lower class to get a divorce. In 1854, which was about the same time Hard Times was popular, A divorce and Matrimonial Causes Bill appeared in the House of Lords. Although that bill was struck down, a bill that was very similar to that bill was passed in 1857. So this was a clear example of how his book Hard Times had an affect on the world around him. It caused a bill to be passed in a way. Another example of how his writings affected the world around him was in book two, first chapter on page 115. This line says " a blur of soot and smoke,...". This line is talking about the problem that was occurring in industrial revolution. This problem was with all the factories came a lot of smoke and soot. This problem was later looked at in 1853 when Lord Palmerston presented a bill that passed that year and was put into affect in august 1854. This was not directly his book that caused this bill to be passed but once he wrote about the world notice the problem and the government changed it. So he writings helped pass these two bills. These were ways that Charles Dickens affected the world around him by help changing laws and making it a better world to live in. This is about how the world around Charles Dickens influenced him.
