By autoclave sterilizing each item that will be used in the piercing procedure immediately prior to use, and handling these items with the sterile technique, the risk of disease or infection transmission is reduced. First the person should choose the jewelry that is going to be used in the piercing. There are several different types and gauges of body jewelry. For example, there are barbells, curved barbells, circular barbells, hoops, banana hoops, and many others. Each piece of jewelry ranges in size from 12-18 gauge for a normal piercing. Most piercings are done with fourteen gauge jewelry but it depends on what size the person will be most comfortable with.
