The Art of Bodypiercing

Pop! As the needle goes through my skin I wince in pain. "Are you done yet?" I ask in a high-pitched voice. "Just one second," says the big tattooed man as he twists the ring and snaps the ball into place. As he pulls the rubber gloves off of his hands I sit up and look at my newly pierced navel. Body piercing is considered by many people to be a form of art and a way of self-expression. Body piercing used to be used as a sign of bondage, as opposed to the highly fashionable piercings of today. The navel piercing is currently one of the most popular piercings and it is done on both men and women. The navel piercing is usually done through the little flap of skin on the top side of the navel although some people prefer the piercing to be done at the bottom, side or at an angle. It is also a popular practice to get more than one navel piercing but it is recommended to get one at a time and wait until the last one is fully healed b


efore getting extra navel piercings.

Sterile technique should be implemented with each piercing procedure. By autoclave sterilizing each item that will be used in the piercing procedure immediately prior to use, and handling these items with the sterile technique, the risk of disease or infection transmission is reduced. First the person should choose the jewelry that is going to be used in the piercing. There are several different types and gauges of body jewelry. For example, there are barbells, curved barbells, circular barbells, hoops, banana hoops, and many others. Each piece of jewelry ranges in size from 12-18 gauge for a normal piercing. Most piercings are done with fourteen gauge jewelry but it depends on what size the person will be most comfortable with.
