The Art Of Learning

Teachers or parents favourite cliche is the instruction to study. This is a most tedious and demanding chore to be handled by most of us. The ardous task of studying increases hand in hand without letting up as we mature. Hours of reading, taking notes, seeking out information and listening to others are part and parcel of life. Most of the time the purpose is to get good grades. The irony is after having gone through the paces we might find that we have learned less than we should have even if we would have performed better than expected. It is human nature in wanting to take pride to do well. We are enthusiastic to study when the reasons emanate from within us. However, when the reasons are forced upon. we may resent haveing to study and as a result our performance may decline.

We would not have realised that the process of studying occurs throughout our lives. THerefore, studying does not halt or stagnate when one leaves school. Many of us use study skills in everyday life without recognising it. Hence, it cannot be denied that the most significant exposure we have acquired is to ask questions. This is the basic mode of communication especially at young age in order to fulfill insatiable curiosity. On the other hand,


adult's perspectives are not confined to certain parameters, which have expanded larger beyond one's backyard. THerefore he or she seeks to learn the art of deciding the appropriate time to ask in order to receive a deserving response from others.

On the outset, when studying takes place, we have to manage external distractions surrounding us in the form of irritating sounds, heat, cold and poor lighting systems as well as lack of adequate stationeries. Various methods are used such as note-taking, listening attentively and charting information in graphic forms in order to comprehend complex ideas and concepts. Hence, studying is a means to understanding and the more we learn, the more we are ablle to learn. How does this take place? By learning something new, our knowledge is expanded. THis expansion invokes our in built self-confidence, which enables us to intensify understanding. Besides external distractions, we are faces with internal distractions as well. For illustration, tiredness, excitement, hunger, upset or worries will interfere with our concentration. A case in point is, studying for longperiods of time will do more harm than good. It will be difficult to focus and instead our minds will tend to wander. A
