The Caspian Oil Question

The issue over the black, muddy, and horrible smelling substance called oil is one that has been around for centuries. Since the time of Marco Polo the trade of "Black Gold" has been a source of profit and power due to its extreme utility value. The real importance of oil didn't come around until World War One when there became a demand for it to power not only tanks and other autos, but battleships, the tangible evidence of a nations military might. Today, in the contemporary world, oil holds much more value due to the dependency of it to run the core states. In the 1970's and 80's with the several oil crisis's due to the OPEC's (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) short embargo of the United States, the U.S. has been looking towards other regions in the world for oil deposits. The most promising alternate region was in the area of the Caspian Sea Basin, in central Asia. Unfortunately, at the time that area was just as remote to the industrialized world as the Gobi desert in southern Mongolia. Well, with the break-up of the Soviet Union the region was open to foreign powers/multi-national corporations (i.e. Shell, British Petroleum). Unfortunately, now that the oil has been discover
