A detailed Summary of Things Fall Apart


In the novel Things Fall Apart, Achebe does a good job of trying to interpret what happened in Africa during the early 20th Century. Achebe starts off by giving us a good background of the African heritage, how they lived and the meaning of the way they lived. The title coheres with the book explaining actually how things fell apart in Africa since the coming of the white man and its colonies. Achebe wrote the novel to inform people of the many struggles the Africans went through before they were taken over by the white man. The thing that inspired him most was the to learn more of the African heritage. He writes about the subject of African culture and its economic welfare along with how it was affected by the moving in of missionaries and the white man and their culture. Achebe is trying to capture a world of people living without outsiders and how the outsiders affect the people and change lives of the clan. Achebe portrays Okonkwo as a man trying to piece things together to live a wealthy man's life, and to try to live like a man unlike his fath


I think this book was very popular because of the point of view it was written on. The fact that it is a story is about 'strong man' whose life is dominated by fear and anger. I think that this reflects on the many lives of people today, and they can some how relate to the fear and anger in this book.

The oncoming of the White man and the missionaries had a big impact on Okonkwo more than anyone. Okonkwo was plainly a man of many flaws, but still seen as a hero among his people. Although it seems as if his people see Okonkwo as a hero, the people questioned some aspects of their own culture. Okonkwo couldn't stand to see his clan fall into the white man's religious believes. He tried to talk to his clan to get them to understand his point. Okonkwo kept thinking of the old traditions from the early clansman and their elders, what they would have done in this situation. He noticed that the clan was softening up, and finally killed himself because of it.
