I think this book was very popular because of the point of view it was written on. The fact that it is a story is about 'strong man' whose life is dominated by fear and anger. I think that this reflects on the many lives of people today, and they can some how relate to the fear and anger in this book.

The oncoming of the White man and the missionaries had a big impact on Okonkwo more than anyone. Okonkwo was plainly a man of many flaws, but still seen as a hero among his people. Although it seems as if his people see Okonkwo as a hero, the people questioned some aspects of their own culture. Okonkwo couldn't stand to see his clan fall into the white man's religious believes. He tried to talk to his clan to get them to understand his point. Okonkwo kept thinking of the old traditions from the early clansman and their elders, what they would have done in this situation. He noticed that the clan was softening up, and finally killed himself because of it.
