Today's choices forges tomorrows future

Today's Social Choices Forges Tomorrow's Future

Abandoning or discarding newborns, racial diversity, and the AIDS virus are, I believe, are three major social issues that we need to deal with in today's society. The number of newborns abandoned or discarded has increased within the past years. We hear about it on TV and read about it in newspapers. It is illegal to leave a baby to die, and I believe it is unethical to ignore your responsibilities to your child and take the easy way out. Racial diversity is an issue that we have been dealing with for a long time. We have made some significant progresses, but it is not enough. We are still seeing a thin line that is segregating the different races and we need to solve that problem. HIV is another issue that has been around for a while. It is a health threat nowadays, and irresponsible humans can kill the human species.

"Women Charged With Abandoning Baby." "New Born Girl Found in Garbage." These are just two of the many typical headlines in the newspapers in today's society that we see and forget in seconds. We simply do not notice them anymore, because it is too common. I believe abandoning and discarding newborns is a major social issue that worsens each day. "They are stuf

Racial diversity is another social issue. Darol and Julie Holsman were the first white couple to move into an all black upper class neighborhood. This is the opposite of what we usually hear, which is a black family moving into an all white neighborhood. An example of this is the televisions show "The Hughleys". In both situations the families were welcomed into the community with open arms, showing that someday we could all live together as a friendly and peaceful nation. The Hampton City Council has appointed the Citizens Unity Commission (CUC) to look at the issues of diversity of the Hampton City and recommend programs to "pro-actively address those issues". "[The CUC's] philosophy is that racism is a behavior based in ignorance and fear that can best be addressed with exposure and awareness. This means direct dialogue, not "informational" approaches alone". They believe "information must be accompanied by experience". I believe educating the younger generation about diversity and getting them involved in this issue is a good way of ensuring a diversified future. I agree with the CUC that ignorance and fear is what we need to deal with in order to be able to diversify and unite as Americans, or human beings for that matter. This might sound easier said then done, because there will always be people who are not willing to diversify. For example, one of the Holsman's white friend said, "Nobody lives there". And then there is always the "white-power" supporter. Hopefully, someday we have dimmed the ignorance and fear, and made a better place for our children.

When you read in the New York Times that "in Zambia and Zimbabwe, a child born today has a greater chance of dying of AIDS than of living free of the disease" it is obvious why Vice President Al Gore sees AIDS as a "security threat of the greatest magnitude". The estimate of HIV infected individuals in Africa alone is a shocking 22 million. Looking at the statistics, it's also very scary to know that "10 Africans are infected with HIV ...every minute". The UN estimates the 33 million infected worldwide will spread the virus "at a rate of 10,000 each day". I believe that the AIDS virus is a very imp
