Wide Serrgaso Sea

According to the ancient Greek tale the world is maintained on the back of three elephants. Each elephant is necessary to the stability of the world. Likewise each family is based on three factors: love, respect, and understanding. When one elephant is taken away the families relationship is shaken but not ruined. But when all the elephants are taken away and the family is based on a bag of money, the love, respect, and understanding are materialistic as the gold coins inside. In the book, "Wide Sargasso Sea", by Jean Rhys the relationship of Annette and Mason, Antoinette and Rochester are based on money. In such an intimate relationship, between a man and a woman, if the love, respect, and understanding are forced together by gold they will soon fall apart and diminish to nothing.

Ever since we are introduced to Annette she is unhappy. Some may perceive her as crazy, I just see a lonely woman that lost hope. Her relationships with both her first and second husband were based on money and looks. Annette was a young good looking Martinique girl and Coswel was a wealthy slave owning English man. What would a rich old English man find in a small, poor, quite Martinique girl. The answer is simple sex and power. He had the power ov

er her life and acted as he pleased and he got to have sex with a young good-looking girl. Though in the book it is not clear weather she loved him or not his obscene behavior clearly affected her. Annette sold herself to him. Cosway bought her for sex and she sold herself for money. Annette and Cosway, with all the sex and money, were very unhappy. "He drank himself to death. Many's the time - well! And all those woman! She never did anything to stop him - she encouraged him." Cosways love and respect for Annette was as cheap as the money she married him for.

Behaving as if she did not learn from her mistakes, Annette's second marriage is as disturbing as the first. Similar to the first marriage Annette marries a wealthy English man. Again the same question arises, "why should a very wealthy man why could take his pick of all the girls in the West Indies and in England too...marry a widow without a penny to her name?" and the same answer responded, "Annette is such a pretty woman. And what a dancer." Again Annette sells herself for money and Mason bought himself a pretty woman to do as he pleases with. Like Mason shut Annette out of his life, Annette shut out everybody else. Annette didn't love herself; therefore she could not be loved. Mason did not come to the West Indies for love, "he came to make money as the all do." Annette's relationship with Mason was doomed for unhappiness. Her desire for money was greater then
