digital audio broadcast

It is common for individuals in today's society to reminisce about the many aspects of their youth. Of the most memorable events are the arts, especially music, as it is the foundation of the groundwork for the further creation of one self. Through the powerful touch of music, we have learned our alphabet, how to count, how to do the hokey pokey and ring around the roses. A universal theme that crosses all barriers, cultural and racial alike, are lives are continually changing and being shaped by the sound of music. Many have been so fortunate as to have the experience of being part of an audience firsthand, a moment to be cherished forever. Whether it be Elvis, Rolling Stones, the Beatles or Michael Jackson through the lyrical content, melody, and overall mood, an indelible impression is left upon the individual. Music has always been a very important element in the development of our society, from the invention of the first radio waves to the recent developments of digital radio. I can remember as a youth driving in my grandfathers 1950's Cadillac where the radio has only a few channels and there was no cassette player! I would think to myself; how did they endure such suffering? Continuing on that train of thought I would query

So what's the story behind this innovative high-tech acronym? Essentially, DAB is to radio what the Compact Disk was to the recording industry, in that it drags the antediluvian AM/ FM broadcasting system into the digital age of crystal-clear, studio quality communication. Analogue radio requires a 'carrier frequency', which, as the name suggests, carries the varying signal, which is responsible for storing the music or speech of the program. A loud sound at a given frequency masks quieter sounds at similar frequencies. The lowest levels are discarded since they have no perceivable effect. Each different radio station requires a different carrier frequency.

There have been many key contributors to radio over the years, originating with Guglielmo Marconi, who, could not have imagined where his early obsession with Heinrcl Hertz's electric waves would end. In 1894, at the prominent age of 20, much to his parent's amazement he sent the first radio waves across their attic to ring a bell. Throughout his outstanding lifetime Marconi fine-tuned the radio world attempting to allow everyone in the world access to the medium.

A century subsequent to the initial radio broadcasts where flickering through the atmosphere, an innovative signal grasped our attention by humming over our heads in the shape of Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB). It has been under development since 1981 at the Institut fur Rundfunktechnik (IRT) and since 1987 as part of a European research project (Eureka, 147) Yearning for the fame of becoming pioneers in all of this commotion several broadcasters, research institutes, network providers/ operators and consumer electronics firm have contributed.

In today's day and age the rate of change of things becomes quicker and quicker. Little things
