Sometimes you ask yourself, what really was a slave's life like? To a slave, he or she saw their lives as an animal would see its life. They knew that they work the fields for the rest of their lives from the age of twelve to however long they lived. Their backs were torn from being lashed and beaten. Slaves worked hard all day long picking cotton, harvesting crops, and plowing fields. Slaves had to eat out of animal troughs and the food they ate, you would most likely find in a jail cell today. They were fed rice, corn bread, lard, and they drank water.

Slaves sang songs to keep themselves occupied and to help other slaves escape to freedom. In the songs they sang, they talked about the life they had before becoming a slave, about their home, their wives and children and about the pain that they went through. Some songs that we still hear today are songs that were sung by the slaves. For example, "Dayo" is one of the songs that we still hear today.

Before the Civil War, songs became a powerful form of communication and expression among the slaves. Things that the slaves could never speak aloud were sung in songs. They used code words to help slaves escape and to pass information along to those slaves t
