Aristophanes' satirical comedy Lysistrata, defied all characteristics of ancient Greek women. It was a revolutionary piece, having the hero of the story a smart, independent, confident and strong-willed woman. These characteristics are made apparent through Aristophanes' use of diction, and imagery leading to tone in all spoken parts said by Lysistrata.
Aristophanes gave Lysistrata an influential and all -powerful voice in the play compared to all the other characters. Her confidence, and authoritative nature is easily perceived through her diction and tone. She is sure of herself, sure of her reign of the women, and sure of her plans success in ending the war and creating peace. As she states her plan to the women she uses words such as "force, negotiate, and self-control". She is not deterred by the negative reaction given to her by the women when they refuse to remain abstinent from sex. Men definitely do not intimidate Lysistrata, when she speaks with them she always has a condescending undertone in her voice. When the commissioner confronts Lysistrata she shows her power, and questions his intelligence (pg.382 "you don't need crowbars nearly as much as you need brains"). On page 392 she goes as far to say that she will save him. Also while talking to him on page 395 she says "there isn't a man in the country." Due to that fact she and the other women take it upon themselves to end the war. These quotes show her fearlessness and buoyancy, and prove her personality characteristics through her use of an ever-powerful tone.
Lysistrata ultimately wins her goal of obtaining peace through her persuasiveness and ability to make quick resolutions. On page 449 her use of words and tone is exactly what the men needed to hear in order to make peace (Now first attend to your purification, then we, the women will welcome you to the citadel and treat you to all the delights of a home cooked banquet...).
