The Great Gatsby - Character identity
Personal identity is very difficult to define. Everyone has an image in their mind of who they want to be and how they want to lead their lives. These ideas are usually very different from the actual identity of a person. Throughout the novel "The Great Gatsby", by F. Scott Fitzgerald the search for identity is continuos. The main characters are on a rollercoaster of uncertainty trying to protect the images that they have created for themselves. Money, love, passion and foolishness lead Jay Gatsby, the novels main character to lead a life of lies and confusion. Gtasby appears to be very confident and sure of his every move. He stands tall with pride, and people respect him. His confidence is actually very deceiving. Although Gatsby throws spectacular parties on a very regular basis, he never attends them. He cannot mingle and socialize with the guests. Gatsby confesses this to Nick very early on in the novel. Gatsby has crated the image that he leads a glamorous life and has a very exciting history. At his parties many people try to guess what he did during the war and how he earned his money. Gatsby allows them to think outrageous things and he never gives anybody a straight answer about his past, or corrects people
Daisy needs people to feel sympathy for her. This gives her a chance to feel good about her life. In fact Daisy leads a very good life, and has no real complaints. She is creating an image that she the poor distressed wife of Tom Buchanan. Daisy obviously doses not believe this herself, because when she had the opportunity to leave Tom she chose not to. Gatsby begins to take advantage of his money by using it to change his name from Jay Gatz to James Gatsby. His old name dose not fit the image he is trying to create for himself, and so he had it changed. To uphold his new image Gatsby also ensured that everyone thought he obtained his education from Oxford. Oxford is an elite and prestigious school, and fit the image Gatsby is doing his best to create. once they think they know his true history. Daisy is also concerned with how things look and appear to others. She loves to impress people and is very materialistic. Daisy could not react to her husband's affair because that might upset the balance in her life, and would show people that things were not perfect. Gatsby also wants to believe that money will solve all the problems in the world, and can buy happiness. Gatsby wanted to go from a poor nobody, to somebody with very high social status. He only wears finest clothes, bought an exquisite house, and spends a fortune trying to get back with his long lost love Daisy Buchanan.
