While Mersault is a very passionate man who engulfs himself in every moment he lives. That passion ends up being the death of him. While throughout the novel we learn about Mersault and his "strange" ways of life and the way he deals with life, but we also understand why he deals with life in the way he does. This is why the Magistrate and the court behead him. They do not understand his love for life and his ways of dealing with life. Mersault would rather speak the truth and not play the games everyone does and die then say something that is not true. If anything Mersault is less a "stranger " then anyone else in the novel.
