The stranger

A detailed Summary of The stranger

"You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life." --Albert Camus (1913 - 1960). Camus Philosophy on life is displayed in his story " The Stranger." Meursault, the novel's hero, a "stranger" to the system of Christian morality insofar as he cannot comprehend it, is certainly not an "stranger", neither consciously choosing to remain outsider society nor being rejected by it. On the contrary, Meursault is the perfect model of a young middle-class man, with an ordinary desk job, and with the ordinary insider's simple taste for watching a movie, having a drink at the local bar, going to the beach, and lying in the sun. Living the most ordinary of lives, not at all a social reject and in no way a rebel, but still he is treated as if he is a " stranger" simply because he lives his life to the fullest and always speaks the truth. Eventually his passion for telling the truth and the prejudices in our society will be the downfall of our hero.

Meursault is considered the outsider to the society that he lives in. People reject him because he refuses to lie. This refusa

If only everyone were as honest and passionate as Mersault, maybe this strange way of life would in fact not be so strange. Then maybe people could be they selves and not worry what other people may be thinking. Our society is so full of people that act as if things bother them that when someone like Mersaullt comes along we shun then and consider the, to be a " Stranger"

While Mersault is a very passionate man who engulfs himself in every moment he lives. That passion ends up being the death of him. While throughout the novel we learn about Mersault and his "strange" ways of life and the way he deals with life, but we also understand why he deals with life in the way he does. This is why the Magistrate and the court behead him. They do not understand his love for life and his ways of dealing with life. Mersault would rather speak the truth and not play the games everyone does and die then say something that is not true. If anything Mersault is less a "stranger " then anyone else in the novel. Everyone has there own way of dealing with life and the adversities life throws in there way and in most cases people say thing or react in ways unlike what they would really
