Harper Lee uses the small town of Maycomb and Scout's family as the basis for describing family values. Harper Lee used the first person narrative to put the reader in the shoes of Scout, a tomboy daughter of Atticus Finch. Atticus and his family live in the small southern town of Maycomb. "Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it"(pg. 5). Atticus was one of the only parents that took time with his children. Him and Scout would read everyday. Boo, once believed to be a horror figure, slowly overtime became Scouts and Jem's friend. In an odd form of friendship, Boo leaves trinkets as gifts and even protected Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell. "Boo was our neighbor. He gave us two soap dolls, a broken watch and chain, a pair of good luck pennies, and our lives" (pg.278). After Boo saved Jem's life, Scout seems to know who it was. This forms a trust between people that have never met. Harper Lee seems to think friendship is something you need to have and tries to describe it in this novel.
