Preventing Accidents in Health Care

The article Patient Safety: Achieving a New Standard for Care discusses information on how to prevent accidents in health care industries. To Err is Human - this is the phrase that makes the health care industries become aware on safety for patients. According to the IOM's report, there is a large number of hospital accidents, causing patients' deaths, that were caused by medical peoples' errors and mishandling of patients. Moreover, IOM reports indicate that flaws in health care systems, aside from individual errors, is another area where medical accidents usually root from.

To solve or minimize the problems that occurs in healthcare industries, the IOM proposed to have a strict focus on patient information. According to the organization, having proper information on a patient, including his medical backgrounds and history, can prevent medical errors such wrong medical findings causing wrong suggestions for medication and wrong treatment methods applied to the patient. To be able to solve such problems, IOM recommends the use of electronic systems that will store patient information and medical health records. Decision-support syste


Paul C. Tang points out several times in his article the importance of the availability of patient information. From such information, proper interventions can be developed in healthcare services, thus leading to an improved safety for patients. A standardized reporting procedure will be useful in this goal. Tang indicates that

HHS (Health and Human Services) should establish a national database that collects anonymous patient information that can be used to develop new interventions to prevent errors and improve safety. This will require a standardized reporting format and uniform terminology to be effective.
