Valley of the Dolls, by Jacqueline Susann chronicles the life of a three young girls working to overcome pain, hardships, and drug abuse and cope with fame, all the while handling the pressure of everyday life. These friends go through things together that most people never dream of, and watch as each other’s lives fall apart. The main character is Anne Welles, and the novel begins with her leaving her small hometown and traveling to New York City. Bored with the sheltered life she has always lead in Lawrenceville, she is in search of love and adventure, and seems to have found exactly what she is looking for when she takes a job as secretary at Bellamy and Bellows, a law firm specializing in protecting the stars. Not long after taking the job, it seems as though she knows everyone in show business, from the big stars like Broadway icon Helen Lawson to the understudy Neely who lives in the same boarding house with her. Anne also gets a boyfriend, Allen Cooper, who is a simple man and more of a friend.
