New York City is and was the financial capital of the United States. But this was even more true during the years that lead up to the Depression, when the New York Stock Exchange soared and then plummeted, precipitating a world-wide financial collapse. One might say the Great Depression began in the city. But the human 'solution' to the depression began in the state as well-as the future President Franklin Delano Roosevelt launched his political career as governor of the state.
