Analysis of Active/Passive Euthanasia
Fundamentally there are two types of euthanasia, Active and Passive. Passive euthanasia is seen in an example where a patient requiring dialysis, is not put on the dialysis machine and hence dies. Active euthanasia is seen where a patient is injected some poison to cause death. "In active euthanasia you directly and intentionally cause a person's death. In passive euthanasia you do not directly take their life but you permit them to die" (Dr. J.P. Moreland). In essence it can be said that in active euthanasia, something is done to cause the death while in passive euthanasia something is not done to cause the death of the patient. Although the end result of both types is the same people do make a moral distinction between the two types of euthanasia. The distinction being, the difference between killing someone and just letting someone die. However there are others who feel that this is one of the same things. Active euthanasia is morally a better option because the patient is relieved from suffering a slow death. His death is quick and less painful compared to passive euthanasia and should be adopted in the terminally ill patients.Advocates for euthanasia state that man has the right to die wi
People advocating for euthanasia say that for patients with terminal illness, this option should be legalized and present. Such patients do not have any cure and should be relieved from the agony and put to a peaceful death. Letting a patient suffer the agony and pain means that the society is brutal and is letting a person suffer when there is an easy way out. Why should man let another man suffer for no reason? When the person will die lets say a week from now so why not put him to sleep peacefully now rather than to let him suffer? These questions are asked by the proponents of euthanasia which aim to make people feel that letting a person suffer for no reason is barbaric and should be avoided. They say that man should help man to make things easier for them. The general public opposing euthanasia however disagrees to this and speaks something similar to what Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, a psychiatrist, said about her dying patients: "Lots of my dying patients say they grow in bounds and leaps, and finish all the unfinished business. [But assisting a suicide is] cheating them of these lessons, like taking a student out of school before final exams. That's not love, it's projecting your own unfinished business" (Burke J. Balch et al.). They feel that suicide or euthanasia as one may call it is wrong for the terminally ill and that they should be given support, helped with solving disputes and restoring relationships. Instead of helping them in the positive way if one just puts them to sleep then that is immoral and unethical. For the terminally ill they say, that if a doctor practices passive euthanasia, then that would be just as painful or maybe even more as compared to the pain he will suffer while on support till death takes him away. Moreover they say that people with terminal illness who go for voluntary euthanasia do so because they are under depression which is something curable and steps should be taken in such a way that the patient is brought out of the state of depression. The problem should be addressed rather to take the easier way out and putting the patient to sleep. Moreover they feel that legalizing euthanasia will be used as a cost effective way to treat those with terminal illness. Further they say that it will also discourage people from finding new treatments and cure for such patients as they will have the option of choosing the easy way out. The most common reason that the side opposing euthanasia has presented is that it is against the religious doctrines like Bible. They fear that man is taking the role of God and this is unethical and immoral. To them death is a factor which belongs to God alone and it is only for Him to decide when a person dies and how he or she dies. The advocates of euthanasia however present arguments that are really strong in response to this. Their idea is that who should decide the boundary beyond which an action is interference with God's role. Further they continue to stress that just because people who believe in God feel that it is interfering with God's role, then what about those who do not believe in a Supreme Being. Why should they follow and accept what the followers and believer of God say.
