Public Relations: Reaching Employees First, Keeping External Public's Informed

Public relations can be a vital part of the marketing campaign of the organization. Instead of paying a great deal of money for advertising a product or service, the PR can provide free or relatively low cost communication with individuals outside of the company. There are several reasons why PR is essential for keeping external public's informed. First, it is necessary for a company to build up its reputation. People are more willing to use companies that they feel are providing a positive benefit to them or their community. Second, PR is often used to influence the public. This is especially true for political action groups, associations and other similar organizations. Third, with all the bad news in the media, people want to hear something decent that is happening for a change. Public relations specialists can show the positive impact that a company is having through its community relations, for example. Fifth, public relations is one of the best ways to build a brand name.


There is a broad range of print, electronic and media oriented vehicles that are used for public relations purposes. Internally, the Intranet, employee newsletters, video, magazines, posters and bulletin boards are among the many ways to communicate information. Employees always like to hear things firsthand from the powers that be. Just coming around and saying hello will go a long way in motivation. Externally, the message can be disseminated anywhere from the standard traditional public relations press release, to print materials such as brochures and mailers, to more elaborate means such as kiosks, ticker tapes, painted taxis/buses, mention or visibility of product on a TV show, trade shows, speaking engagements, fake blogs or sending free products to consumers to talk up with others. Sometimes, it is necessary to find a means that is a little bit out of the ordinary-like painting a big logo on the back of a whale at Sea World!
