Crisis Management: The Benefits of an Organization Developing a Proactive Plan and The Importance of An Organization to Communicate Quickly and Honestly in a Crisis Situation

Crisis! Just say the word and the brain freezes. Good judgment is instantly suspended, even in the most cool-headed individual. This is one reason why a proactive crisis management is so important. In an ideal world, of course, things would always proceed smoothly, and one would always have advance notification when something bad was about to happen. But organizations live in the real world, and must anticipate that things will not always go well, and one's fortunes may shift suddenly. Having a good strategy of what to do before a crisis occurs ensures that the 'damage control' mechanisms will already be in place, and one will not have to rely upon quick thinking and perhaps the faulty judgment of a pressure-cooker crisis environment. "Typically, proactive crisis management activities include forecasting potential crises and planning" on how to deal with a crisis. (McNamara, 1999)

One important aspect of the desire not to communicate when dealing with a crisis is that it can actually hurt the organization.
