Database Optimization: What It Is and Why It's Important

The general meaning that the term database constitutes is that it is a collection of data. This is the definition that is commonly used or described to the term for a layman's understanding. However, technically, or in a more detailed explanation, the term database can be further explained as follows: it is a collection of data that is systematically organized in a structure of related data for better storage and retrieval of information.

In almost all kinds of system whose purpose is to provide information, a database plays an important role because it is the central component of a system where information are stored and retrieved. As indicated by Wikipedia, it is the component that answers queries of the users.

An ideal database is one whose structure is designed to allow quick access of information. This is done through the use of different database models representing how a database is structured. In a database, it is important that data are optimized while the relationship between data is maximized to allow multiple ways of using all available information.

In general, a database is the life of information technology. Without a database, systems whose purpose is to provide information will

An optimized database uses a data schema where data is not redundant and where data are consistent with each other. In a non-redundant data schema, similar data is stored only once but can be used by many other groups of data through the use of primary keys that link one data to groups of data. When information is stored in an intelligent manner, such as in a non-redundant method, it can be considered that the database is optimized. There are, however, other methods for database optimization. Among many others include the use of right primary keys in tables, the proper sorting of data, and the proper grouping of data according to their relationship with each other.

Almost everything that we used to do manually can now be done by automation in a quick span of time because access to information is no longer today's problem. For instance, some years ago, finding information entails an individual to turn from pages to pages and books to books in a library where the cost certainly includes time and energy of the person. However, today, all that one needs is a click on the Internet and information will surely flood before his eyes. Without a database, such influx of information in a quick span of time will not be possible. Hence, a database is important because it allows a faster way of finding information in what could be a time-consuming process should a conventional method is used. Because of the fast and continuing improvements in our technology, quickly improving many aspects in the way we live and work, it is important that one is able to cope with fast developments and a database can help in doing so.

Access to information is quick. Similar to how quick we are
