Admissions Paper: Acceptance into the MAT Program

After years of successful and rewarding work in the corporate world, I am taking a hard left turn toward a most novel and seemingly odd career change. When I first told my friends and family about my decision, they thought I was crazy. That is, all except the few that know me well. They all know that I have actually wanted to be a teacher for a long time. Becoming an elementary school educator after enjoying a lucrative business career seems to many of my colleagues like a step backwards, most obviously in terms of salary. In fact, the two jobs seem diametrically opposed. The one is concerned mainly with the cold adult world of stock trades, investments, corporate takeovers, and the bottom line. The other is primarily concerned with the softer needs of children: of play, of patience, of participation in a curriculum. I anticipate and look forward to a radical lifestyle change. I failed to pursue a teaching career after attending college because I found work easily within the corporate world. Having established myself in the world of business and having enjoyed a degree of financial success, I have had much time for soul-searching and lately discovered that I am deriving little in terms of deep inner fulfillment from the corporate world. On the other hand, the corporate world taught me loads of lessons and expanded my personal and professional horizons. I don't regret any of the decisions I made and yet the world of business failed to offer a deep sense of satisfaction. The choice to change careers is thus a natural one, and education is the only avenue that I hope to pursue. In particular, I want to teach at the elementary school level.
