Silent Characters in Browning's Poems: "My Last Duchess" and "Porphyria's Lover"

A silent narrator in Robert Browning's poem, "My Last Duchess" is the duchess herself. She once had a painting done of herself by Fra Pandolf who had captured all her features' intimate details, including the passionate glances she loved to often make. These glances, which consisted of her blushing furiously, always occurred whenever she received compliments from anyone. She thanked many men this way, either through her blushing cheeks or even sometimes through a grateful speech. She was jolly by nature, whose passionate glances towards ot


In the poem "Porphyria's Lover" the silent narrator is Porphyria, who once made a visit to her lover on a stormy day. When she came into her lover's room she immediately shut out the cold, thus making the cottage warm. She then took off some of her clothes and sat down beside him. She then proceeded to make him comfortable around her by putting his arm around her waist and by making his cheek lie on her bare shoulder. She then kept repeating to him how much she loved him even though she was too weak to actually give in to that love forever.
