Researching a Particular Genre of American Humor
The first question that has to be dealt with is the exact of understanding of satire as a form of literature and the gradual changes that it has undergone through history terminating with the form of present usage. It is not that one agrees with all the modes of usage, by that is only a discussion without any meaning as individuals use it in different manners for their own benefits, and their outlook is not always the protection of the correct form of literature. After all, literature is also the source of income for many. As a form of literature, satire treats the entire society as being part of fragmentation, with all the concerned ill effects not very far away. It sees chaos as looming, cities are wastelands, rooms in schools are full of jungles containing only blackboards, society is full of gangs and mobs, marriages either ceases altogether or remains as a matter of convenience, the binding material of civilized society gradually lose their effects and the entire society seems to be coming apart as the social fabric seems to be falling apart. It is the form of literature that deals with society that is no longer full of life or development, and all aspects of the life do not seem whole or total
Let us also think about the word satire and its development. The word itself seems to have come from ancient times and from a process of primitive magic, ritual and curse. One of the earliest records of satire, when it was called satire is from the plays in the time Aeschylus' which were held around 475 BC. He had short plays, but when there were some gaps, men dressed as satyrs made fun of the actors and this probably led to the use of the word, satiric. It is also unlikely that this had started only then, but had probably come down from the time and rituals of Dionysian origin and then one would say that the practices are from at least 1200 BC. According to the estimates of Aristotle, who lived during 384 to 322 BC, the growth of satire was from magic curses that were developed by leaders of phallic songs and hurled at general people. The original purpose of these phrases was to remove evil influences that surrounded individuals so that the positive fertility magic of their phallus might start working. This was a sort of a magic ritual which ultimately developed into Greek Old Comedy. (Shapes of Satire) The picture is to highlight the description from the book, so one cannot say that the picture was wrong or not meant to be put. It is also probably the first time that a book is being illustrated with the contents of the book. The question still remains, as to whether that creates literature, as satire is not a criticism of any individual, but of the entire society. There are sections in the book where the author is able to directly point out failures of the administration in carrying out actions for the general good of the public and even a commentary on the distortions that are being carried out by the media, but again that is a matter of politics and not literature. The best part of the book is not humorous, let alone being a satire. This is a detailed and emotional description of a memorial service for Sen. Paul Wellstone of Minnesota who passed away in the course of a campaign for a political position. It is an unfortunate death, but this is again no reflection on the society. The criticism by Franken is about the general denouncement of the rally which was felt to have a partisan outlook. According to him, the right wing had created a myth about the incident and this had made it easier for the journalists to report on the rally through just reading a few co-operative pieces, and see the pictures on the television to get his story. According to him that is a lot easier than going through the long memorial service, or even talking to individuals who had gone for the ceremony. (Franken liberally dishes out satire, politics in 'Lies') The masses liked it and by the middle of June, tapes of the broadcast were circulating all over USA. There were also attempts to broadcast the play on both coasts which were stopped through the efforts of American Legion and some individuals. There were 100,000 copies of the play made as a long playing record and sold under the name of "Discuiousitis" during 1954 and 1955. There is no proof that Ship was concerned personally with this production which was released by two Americans. This was also viewed as communist propaganda by Ed Sullivan in his newspaper column, and New York Times wondered publicly whether this satire may cause direct conflicts between America and Canada. According to the information given in New Republic, the then President, Eisenhower had the record played at one of his cabinet meetings. The question may be asked as to what were the contents of this drama that caused such a high amount of furor. Another similar write up is about immigration and it is said that when the millions of immigrants came to America, they provided political power for the important persons within their communities. These persons had political machines which helped their supporters through patronage to help their assistants and supporters in adjusting to a new culture, as also staying in the
