Pragmatism in Knowledge Management: Perspectives from the Western and Eastern Experiences

In the field of philosophy, the discipline of pragmatism emerged as one of the dominant and prevalent philosophies with the development of society towards modernism. In an ever-intellectually developing society, pragmatism offered a "middle ground" in which philosophers and individuals are able to reconcile the human mind's capabilities with reality (i.e., physical experience of the individual).

As a philosophy, pragmatism posits that theories and ideas must be given equal chances of being tested or experimented. That is, they should first be considered feasible-reconciles both reality and from ideas conceived by the human mind-so that this idea or theory will be considered truth or authentic knowledge. In the articles presented in Nonaka's text, "Knowledge Emergence," the application of pragmatism as a philosophy is evidently illustrated through the topic of knowledge management. Essays contained within the text discuss one or more particular aspects of pragmatism as applied in the 21st century, or more specifically, in the period wherein society is information-centered and technology-mediated. In the analysis and discussion of the essays, this paper asserts that knowledge management is demonstrated as a fusion or merging of ideas and theories: not only one, but two or more ideas/theories are utilized to create knowledge that provides optimal benefit to the society.
