According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is "characterized by overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations" In some cases, the individual will only experience anxiety in specific situations, such as stage fright or being in a crowded room. In addition to the psychological symptoms of the disorder, sufferers may notice physical signs such as blushing or excess sweating. Some persons who unknowingly suffer from the disorder may self-medicate by using alcohol or drugs to lessen their inhibitions in social situations, thereby adding to their mental health problems.
