According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is "characterized by overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations" In some cases, the individual will only experience anxiety in specific situations, such as stage fright or being in a crowded room. down the street. Social phobia can create "crippling fears and constant anxiety," leading to panic attacks in severe instances (Richards 2005). In addition to the psychological symptoms of the disorder, sufferers may notice physical signs such as blushing or excess sweating.
