Language: An anthropologist once said, "When you learn another language, you gain another soul." What do you think this means?

The original quotation came from Charlemagne, King of the Franks who lived 1,200 years ago. "To have another language is to have a second soul". The origin of a language is intricately tied with a nation's culture and philosophy. It reflects how a nation thinks. The origin of even a single word can have a rich history, and the grammar says something about how people think and feel. For example, the Chinese language is represented by characters that represent simple concepts such as fire and water. However, several combinations can produce complex meanings. The word "crisis", for instance, is composed of the symbols for "danger" and "opportunity", which has a richer meaning than the one we're used to. A language reflects new combinations of ideas. Because of this, a person sees things differently upon learning a new language. Even the English


A new language opens up a new universe of ideas and concepts that we didn't know before, and gives us a new perspective of reality. Because of this, we acquire a second soul that can see things differently about life.

idiom "bite the bullet" means something more than just its literal meaning, but a concept about accepting the unpleasant result of one's actions.

Language is more than just a means of communication. It shapes our perception of reality and determines how we see the world. Eskimos, for example, have more than 18 words for snow. Countries that do not have snow will be amazed with this fact. There are other concepts that are present in one language but not in others.
