Sex Segregation in the Schools

Segregating the sexes in all levels of schooling, from elementary to middle school to college, has once again become a fashionable educational solution for a number of societal problems. For example, because girls often experience a drop in their math and science test scores after hitting puberty, a decline often attributed to societal pressure to reject disciplines often seen as male, some educators believe there is a benefit for single-sex mathematical classes that specifically address girl's needs. Also, because some rambunctious young boys find themselves overly constrained in a traditional classroom, it is argued that single sex environment might prove helpful for these children, as they could become a part of a classroom that stresses the physical types of learning in which boys are thought to excel. Even feminists in favor of single-sex education on the college level often point to the fact that many graduates of all-women's schools, most famo


Even beyond the generalizations made about the benefits of separating boys from girls, even if the positive assumptions about single sex education were entirely true, and gave an added benefit to student's ability to learn while in elementary, middle, high school or college, the students in those classrooms must eventually go out into the real world, and learn with all of the pressures and distractions of a co-ed workplace environment. A girl who attends all-female private schools must have the confidence and also the social skills to deal with men as colleagues. Although a boy might temporarily flourish in an all-male environment, but viewing women as separate from his educational and vocational endeavors will ultimately serve neither him nor society in creating a fairer and more equitable workplace.
