What makes a life meaningful? Some persons might say that adhering to a formal religion is necessary to make a persons' life meaningful. However, even if a person does not subscribe to a formal religious theology, some sense of higher ethical commitment outside of an individual's personal, private sphere of pleasure is necessary to make that person feel as if his or her life has meaning. Although making money to support a family, enjoying good times with friends, or watching a good film in solitude may be gratifying and fun, these activities are not the same as finding meaning in human existence.
