Richard Avedon, one of the famous American portrait photographers, came from Russian Jewish family who migrated to United States where he was born in New York City in 1923. He became a member of the Merchant Marine at the age of 19 as a photographer; this is where his talent in photography started to develop. He continued his career as photographer in a department store and soon an art director Alexey Brodovitch who works in different magazines such as Vogue and Look discovered him. And in no time, he set up his own studio to publish his metaphors in Harper's Bazaar and Vogue magazines. His techniques were quite different from other photographers since he did not f
ollow the customary images of the subjects. He wanted to see his subjects with different emotions and actions. He is best known for his unique and strikingly truthful portraits of people in front of an ever-present white background (Ale-Etz, 2006).
During his early years, he loved the works of Martin Munkacsi. He was attracted on how Munkacsi photograph his subjects since Munkacsi snaps his models as according to their natural movements.
