Mark Rothko was an American Jewish painter and one of the founders of the New York School of Art. He was an abstract expressionist whose work concentrated primarily on basic human emotions. When he painted, he was not into using a lot of vivid or bright colors. In his paintings, he would use only a few colors that were intense. For most of his life, he was depressed and actually ended up committing suicide as a result of his depression. His paintings reflected his depressed emotions. Jason Pollock was another American painter who had emotional problems. Jason Pollock's depression led him into severe alcoholism. Because of his depressed state, his paintings also reflected a lot of emotion. His paintings were abstract expressions of unconscious imagery. Jason Pollock was famous for his drip painting where he would lay the canvas on the floor and then would pour or drip the paint onto the canvas. After dripping, he would use a knife, a stick or towels to manipulate the painting. Norman Rockwell was another American artist whose art reflected abstract expressionism. Dan Flavin was an American minimalist sculptor who created sculptural objects and installations from commercially available fluorescent light fixtures. Carl Andre was an American minimalist artist who create sculptures made out of wood. His work was very similar to that of Marisol. Both, Dan Flavin and Carl Andre were minimalist artists who created a lot three dimensional artwork that gained a lot of public attention. Conceptual Art and Video Art was created during a time when there were rapid changes in technology. Peter Campus, Michael Asher, and Richard Serra were three of the most influential artists of this movement. Chapter three discussed the Pop Art Movement. Three prominent artists of the Pop Art movement are Andy Warhol, Edward Ruscha and Marisol. Michael Asher is a conceptual artist known since the late 1960s for site-specific installations that offer a critique of art institutions. Rather than designing new art objects, Asher typically alters the existing environment, by repositioning or removing artworks, walls, facades, etc. Like many of the artist of his time, he was also a well-known novelist.
