New graduates: A Concise Review of 3 Studies on the Benefits of New Graduate nurse Residency Programs in Hospitals

Study #1: The Creation, Implementation, and Evaluation of a Nurse Residency Program Through a Shared Leadership Model in the Intensive Care Setting

Purpose of the Study: To present empirical evidence that supports the positive effect that nursing residency programs can have on the recruitment and retention of nursing students. Prior to the residency program, the hospital was successful in retaining only 8 out of 93 nurses that were run through orientation from 1999 to 2000.

Study Design: This study was designed to take advantage of an exiting group of graduates who were the first to benefit from the nurse residency program. The study is designed to gather feedback from the students, the preceptors/mentors, and the faculty of the hospital. The answers provided indicated

Sample: The sample from which the data is drawn is restricted to written responses and interviews. Since these responses were entirely voluntary, there is no guarantee that their distribution is representative of the entire population.

Instruments: Exit interviews were used prior to the study to establish the most cited reasons for early termination of a nurse. The most common response was the lack of quality orientation.

Instruments: The instruments of the study are the essential philosophy being adopted. The three primary facets of the nurse residency philosophy are enhanced socialization, improved transition to practice, and increased student accountability

Study Design: The study is a proposed curriculum change that includes the concept of clinical immersion in the fourth year, with the express goal of said immersion being the hands-on training of the nurses in a real-world environment, and the proving of skill performance.

Study #3: Nurse Residency Program: An Effective Tool for Recruitment and Retention

: The procedure for collecting data consists of voluntary participation in filling out response forms.

Sample: The sample intended for the program is the students of the program as the new steps are instituted into the program. In addition to any classroom or laboratory performance, the clinical immersion will take place in a real hospital with live patients, under the surveillance of the staff nurses.
