Proposal: Social Dysfunction and Self-Esteem in Adolescence

The development of the social being has been of interest to researchers as long a it has been acknowledged that the social nature of the human being is a dominant part of his and her survival and development. Social dysfunction can be defined as many things but is loosely described by one researcher as:

Social dysfunction includes problems such as trouble making or keeping friends, getting along with others in social settings, trouble concentrating, serious difficulty coping with day-to-day stress, and unreasonably strong fears. (Newcomer, Kang, Kaye & Laplante, 2002)

In the case of social dysfunction in adolescents there would be an inclusion of factors such as crime against others, property or deceptive risk behaviors such as alcohol and drug use and abuse or even such factors as reckless driving, as these are behaviors that run contrary to the goals of the community and the family. The idea that the social function and in turn dysfunction that dominates the lives of humans can be an integral part of their development on its own has largely been ignored at the least and denied at the worst.

Sometimes I live with my mother and sometimes with

For example, if self-esteem is inversely related to problem behaviors in individual models, it cannot logically be inferred that increases in self-esteem in the population will reduce the incidence of problem behaviors. Therefore, we should be modest about the usefulness of research (Ketterlinus & Lamb, 1994, p. 105)
