Andy Warhol 2
Andy Warhol was one of the most important and influential artists that ever lived. He was famous in his own lifetime and is now a legendary person, whose paintings and quotes are used and misused by many. The quote: "In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes," is his most famous and therefore most misquoted and misused quote. Andy Warhol was already sick of it in his lifetime and when asked about it, he would say that he didn't like the quote anymore and that he was going to make a new version of it.(Colacello, pg. 140) By 1955 he was the most successful and imitated commercial artist in New York. Warhol pioneered the process whereby an enlarged photographic image is transferred to a silk screen that is then placed on a canvas and inked from the back. It was this technique that enabled him to produce the series of mass-media images. These incorporated such items as Campbell's Soup cans, dollar bills, Coca-Cola bottles, and the faces of celebrities. The Campbell's Soup and the dollar bill came about after Andy Warhol talked to the interior designer Muriel Latow in December, 1961. She told him to put something he loved the most in the world(that being money) and to paint something so common that ever
Artists like Basquiat and Steven Sprouse became famous because of their association with Warhol. (This is not meant in a negative way. I'm sure they could have became famous anyway, but the presence of Warhol helped them). He designed the cover of Aretha Franklin's album "Aretha." Actors have also played Warhol in different movies as "Death Becomes Her," "The Doors," "I Shot Andy Warhol," and "Basquiat," played by David Bowie. Andy Warhol continued the tradition of Duchamp, was contemporary with Roy Lichtenstein, and is considered by many to be the father of Pop Art. He was a complex person and I doubt if anyone can fully understand why he did what he did and why he painted as he did. Warhol made a series of experimental films dealing with such ideas as time, boredom, and repetition after he bought his first camera in July, 1963. The first movie he started making was "Sleep" and after that followed "Tarzan and Jane Regained, Sort Of". He also worked with a rockband called "The Velvet Underground" formed by Lou Reed and John Cale.(Colacello, pgs. 120-122) Ultra Violet, one of his superstars and author of "Famous for 15 Minutes: My Years with Andy Warhol," gave me further insight about Warhol. I found this anecdote to be quite amusing. "Another time I ask him to name his favorite movie. I tell him mine is "Gone With
