The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin In American history there are many great Americans. Benjamin Franklin is one of them. He had many professions: a printer, scientist and a statesman. He has seventeen siblings. His father Josiah Franklin a candle and soap maker. He married Deborah Read and had a son William Temple Franklin. As a scientist he developed the lighting rod, which prevented lighting to strike and burn a house. He was a colonel of a Philadelphia regiment (1765), and started the first fire department. A colonial agent in England for Pennsylvania, from 1764 to 1775.
