Gandhi was a man who put all his personal interests and needs on the line for his people and country. Ghandi's campaign began in South Africa with his defense of the civil rights of Indians who were living in South Africa. After the success of the African campaign Ghandi returned home to fight the British Empire for treating the Indians as second class citizens, Ghandi decided that India must be free. But unlike many revolutionists Ghandi took the path of non-cooperation and non-violence to accomplish his goals. Ghandi believed that punishment of men should be left to god. Since we were all such sinners we had no right to judge another man for his actions. Ghandi's campaigns for freedom and equal rights began in South Africa. He did not believe that the English were treating the people fairly so he fought for the independence of South Africa. After a long hard battle the people finally received equal treatment. During his years in South Africa, Ghandi also worked on behalf of the untouchables, or Harijans he detested poverty and that is why he wanted the English to withdraw from India. During one of these demonstrations a group of soldiers began shooting on the civilians who were demonstrating peacefully, and killed over one thousand men, women and children. After the shooting the Hindu's started riots all over India. Ghandi sticking to his principles of non-violence began to fast, which he believed, would put a stop to the rioting. After many days when Ghandi was close to death the people finally calmed down and stopped the rioting, This just clearly states how much the people actually loved him and why they called him "The Great Soul."
