to kill a mockingbird 2

When a man earns the respect of others it is rarely lost no matter what that man does. Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird dramatically shows how one town chooses to respect a man, Atticus Finch. Atticus is not only the father of Jem and Scout, but also a determined lawyer. He endures the hardships of a controversial racial case, but never loses his respect as a lawyer when defending a black man. This defiantly depicts that Atticus Finch is a well-respected man. This is displayed in the fact the white community and black community respect him.

The white community respects Atticus by electing him to state legislature for another year. Since most of the white community hated Atticus for defending a black man, Atticus made life pretty hard on Jem and Scout. While in school, Jem and Scout's classmates were very nice to them. This is because their parents told them to be nice to them because they could not help having Atticus for a parent. But there is one thing Scout never understands, why "inspite of Atticus's shortcomings as a parent, people were constant to re-elect him to state legislature that year" (243); even though most of the white community dislikes him for defending a black man. Electing him to state legislature sh

ows that they have respect for him as a lawyer. Since Atticus is brave enough to go against the whole town and defend a black man, he proves he is qualified to represent it. This respect shows that the white community accepts Atticus as a very powerful lawyer, and is willing to let him represent their town in state legislature. When Atticus defended a black man in court shows even more why he is such a good lawyer and why the white community respects him.

All the citizens for Maycomb County display their respect for Atticus Finch in their own way. The black community respects Atticus, not only as a lawyer, but also as a pioneer to rid the racial issue in Maycomb County. When Atticus loses his case with Tom Robinson, the whole black community gets up and gives Atticus a standing ovation. They know that Atticus could never win the case, but were very proud and thankful that he did not give up when he knew his client was black. The white community's respect is shown toward Atticus when they re-elect him to town legislature. They might not respect him for defending a Tom Robinson, but they do realize that this only shows that he is an excellent lawyer. Respect must be earned by proving yourself worthy to withstand prosecution to get to your goal. A determined person is due respect.

Not only does the white community respect Atticus; the black community display
