The Aztec are named form the word Aztlan meaning "White Land" or "Place of the Herons". They had many other names. They were called the Tenochca and the Mexica. The Aztec called to themselves as Culhua - Mexica. Nahuatl was the language they spoke and are still spoken in central Mexico.

The origin of the Aztec people is uncertain. After their arrival in the valley, the Aztecs settled in its northwestern section. It was there that they first made chinampas, artificial islands.
