Tiger Woods 2
Tiger Woods started learning golf when he was six months old from his high chair (Kramer 6). He would watch his father's practice swings. At ten months old, he got down from his high chair and took a swing with a sawed-off club. A swing that may turn out to be more historical than Alan Shepard's six-iron on the moon. Tida, Tiger's mother, has pictures of him on a practice green at eleven months. When Tiger was eighteen months old, he would go to a nearby driving range and hit a bucket of balls. When he was done, Tida would put him back in his stroller and he would go to sleep. While other toddlers frolicked in sandboxes, Tiger practiced chipping from sand traps. Tiger has been burning up the divots ever since he shot a forty-eight on nine holes on a California course. He was three years old! When he was two, he memorized his Dad's work number. He would call every day and ask if he could play golf with him (Kramer 9). Every day Earl would pause, making Tiger think. Then he would agree.Tiger was the youngest player to win the United States Junior Amateur title at age fifteen (Kramer 16). He was also first to win it three times all of which were won on the final hole. As a teen, Tiger tried several other sports. He
happens." It would happen repeatedly and each time he would say "Daddy, I am trying very hard." Earl would say "I know you are trying, just keep trying." Tiger would give his father progress reports. "Daddy, I wanted to bang my club today but I said no. I am going to hit the next one real solid." That is how he learned to play angry (Reilly 34). All because they allowed him space and then made him take responsibility for his actions. At his debut, Tiger was accompanied by his mother and his father; three International Management group representatives; a Nike representative; a Titleist representative; his coach; his sports psychologist; a Los Angles public relations man, and a California lawyer/family friend. His first shot as a pro was a 336-yard drive straight down the middle. He later described it as his most memorable shot in the tournament. The first round he fired a sixty-seven, the second round he shot a sixty-nine that could have been lower if he would have made some putts. The third round tired him; he scrambled to shoot a seventy-three, which knocked him out of contention (Savage 57).
