What Are Sassoon's Attitudes Towards War

A detailed Summary of What Are Sassoon's Attitudes Towards War

In this essay I will explore Siegfried Sassoon's attitudes to war. Siegfried Sassoon detested war and so in 1917 started a crusade against fighting. He said 'I can no longer be a party to prolonging those sufferings for ends which I believe to be evil and unjust.' This sums up his whole feeling that effects his war attitudes.

In 'The Hero' Siegfried Sassoon uses contrasting stanzas to emphasise the harshness of the last stanza. In the second verse the Brother officer is telling 'the poor old dear some gallant lies that she would nourish all her days, no doubt' this is quite a sympathetic line that makes the last stanza have more of an impact. In his poem Siegfried Sassoon shows that no matter how many stories the mother is told she will believe them because she doesn't know what really happens in the war, because the newspapers and other sources don't always tell the truth.

iers are suffering for unjust reasons. 'To get sent home, and how, at last, he died,' this I feel is evidence that soldiers suffered a lot as he was trying to escape war and he died by doing so.

'Does it matter' is a very sarcastic poem that is attacking other people's attitudes towards injuries, mainly pity.

The war was being prolonged because people were trying to escape as they hated it also nothing was being gained by the war.

I think that Sassoon's attitudes to war are mainly that he doesn't like cowards although he doesn't think that people should go to war, he believes that if a person goes to war they should stay at war and not desert. He also disagrees with the fact that war is often prolonged when object that is wanted can be 'attained by negotiation.' He believes that once war is started it turns its self into a vicious circle that doesn't end quickly.

He shows that people at home don't care i
