1st amendment rights
Throughout the history of this great country America has been faced with a immense problem on where the line should be drawn on matters concerning the government. This has arisen from the foundation on which the Americans fought the British for "equal and personal freedom," in the American Revolution. To this day the rights that were established, as guarantees in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the Constitutional Amendments must still be defined as different situations arise. Now my topic is mainly concerning the 1st Amendment Rights. As a minority in a society that still holds some prejudice equal and personal rights are something I take extremely seriously. Things such as whether or not I'm going to be discriminated because of my skin color, Ethnicity, in the business world or just in a restaurant. What I will use as an example is the censorship of the exhibit "Sensations" at the Brooklyn Museum and the drive, by mayor Guliani to pull public funding. The opposing groups that the exhibit concerns is the artist and the Catholics. So how far should the right of expression be allowed to reach if it's causing depiction and diminishment for another? In the United States the charter of Jamestown colony guaranteed the same rights to British colonists in America with the same rights, liberties, and privileges of English subjects-just as if they had been born and were living there. Now jumping to this century the struggle to define the reach and amount of power that the government should have has been on going for quite sometime. The reason it's so important is that with every situation the rights of all are defined by the ruling since it will always be used in reference, meaning that it involves the rights of everyone. Probably the greatest movement for civil rights is the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which was based on the 1st amendment rights as is the this situation with the Brooklyn Museum. Now there has also been executive organizations that have arisen since this issue has grown. For example: the censorship of the press, which falls under the freedom of speech; art, which falls under freedom of expression and that is where the conflict lies on the neglection of this right and problem of letting something that is demeaning to such a large group such as the Catholic religion. Now when the mayor tried to cut funding for the exhibit the artist began to petition and took it to court where the court decided that the artwork will be protected as freedom of speech and expression since
