Depression and What causes it

Depression is one of the most common medical illnesses of our time, and yet it

remains one of the most misunderstood. It is estimated that as many as one out of every

five people will suffer a major episode of depression at some time in their life.

Depression is a medical illness as real as high blood pressure or diabetes. It is a result of

an actual imbalance of neurotransmitter, which are chemicals needed to transmit

messages from the brain. This imbalance causes real and physical symptoms. It is not a

disease of the mind, and people with this problem are not "crazy:" It is felt in the medical

field that depression is the physiologic, or physical, response to stress. That's all. It's

not a curse or an irreversible condition that lasts forever. It is a physical, mental and

emotional phenomenon that can be treated successfully.

When present, depression is a devastating condition, causing agony, only truly

understood by those who have had the disease. Furthermore, it is malady made worse by

a number of factors, including stress. We have learned a great deal about depression in

recent years. Unfortunately, widespread public education has not occurred in th
